Miami Beach, FL – Over the weekend at a Miami Beach hotspot, DJ SimTunes’ iconic computer played its last gig. As the night was wrapping up a bar-back had lost his balance, and during the commotion, knocked a glass over that forced one of the several adaptors needed for DJ SimTunes’ laptop into the main motherboard. The force from the adaptors snapped the old hardware inside the laptop. This shorted all his components during the process. If only the DJ had invested in some protective DJ equipment or cases from over at hollywooddj.com, the disaster could have been averted.
“It was so sudden! I know my computer sometimes didn’t always look it’s best, but I would slap a new sticker on and it’d look like new.” -DJ SimTunes
The DJ composes his sets using the Maxis video game/music creator for PC, SimTunes. The music he made from SimTunes was accomplished by the use of an original Compaq Armada he was given as a gift from his parents. This juxtaposition with the latest technology is what makes DJ SimTunes’ music so endearing as these dated sounds playing on modern music platforms, like Spotify, makes for quite a unique listening experience. Up and coming artists wanting to make it big on Spotify may want to visit upyourbeats.com to see about boosting their profile on the platform, increasing their plays and followers to attract a wider audience.
“It was my Dad’s old work computer,” Said The DJ. “He [DJ SimTunes’ Dad] purchased my Compaq at an auction liquidating his old employer’s assets to pay off some prostitution scandal.” The DJ continued, “My Dad worked for the none-sex-scandal-laundering part of the company. My Dad had no clue.”
Through the years, DJ SimTunes would refine his skills and become better at his music creation abilities. He chuckled while he admitted to TheKohlrabi that the first few creations in his young age were nothing more than crude drawings of his wiener. In fact, later during our interview he would also admit to us that it was probably the due to the fact that he could play and experiment with his digital wiener so freely that kept him coming for more.
Eventually, he would create complicated rhythms and mixes, that one day would be heard by an influential producer. This day would come when he was boarding a flight at Miami International Airport. As his story goes, he was using his Compaq Armada as a “poor man’s” mp3 player. Embarrassed of his financial situation, he would connect extended headphone wires to poke out from his backpack. He also would rig his laptop so the lid would be open just enough because he wanted to play his mixes. He tripped while rushing to catch a flight and his headphones would disconnect. This exposed his music to everyone in the terminal including his now producer.
“Garry [his producer] was immediately impressed and booked me a gig before I even boarded my plane.” Said DJ SimTunes. “He mentioned that some of his friends said this was his opportunity to explore new software for music creation. Some have even specifically asked why not use Mario Paint. “My friggin’ name is DJ SimTunes, besides there is a super hot chick named DJ MaryO-PaintZ that uses Mario paint for mixing. She’s pretty good”
He wasn’t sure if he was going to emulate on a new laptop or if he was going to find a vintage Compaq laptop and another copy of SimTunes. He brushed off TheKohlrabi’s question quickly with, “whatever is true to the sound.” He seemed most distressed about losing the files he first created. Perhaps something similar to a western digital data recovery service could have brought these files back from beyond the grave so that they may once again see the light of day.
